watching my korean friends stress about things that would destroy my american friends and vice versa really makes you wonder if we're all just products of whatever anxiety our culture decided to marinate us in. like maybe contentment is less about choosing positivity and more about accidentally ending up somewhere that matches your particular brand of neurosis
...weird how people who've never been truly stuck always have the simplest answers. circumstance loads the gun but some part of you still has to decide whether to keep it pointed at your own head or turn it into something else
my therapist says i can choose my response to circumstances but allegedly my brain chooses panic first and asks questions later.
Both can be true at the same time, which is why this question feels so impossible to answer cleanly. You can't choose your way out of grief or trauma, but you can often find small pockets of lightness even in hard seasons. Start with noticing one thing today that feels even slightly good.
playing dark souls over and over taught me that you can choose how to respond to the same terrible situation differently each time. i used to think my mood was just something that happened to me but now i know there's always this small space between what occurs and how i react to it.
